He received his classical guitar lessons from Peter Dornquast at the Hamm Municipal Music School. This was followed by two years of private guitar lessons.
Klaus Rothkegel's early musical journey led him to vocals, exploring repertoire spanning pop and classical styles before culminating in art song. He began his studies in music, majoring in voice, at the Detmold University of Music under Professor Theo Lindenbaum and also attended the Detmold Opera School. In 1991, he graduated with a state teaching certificate in music education. From 1992 to 2024, he was a member of the opera chorus at the Kassel State Theatre. He has performed as a singer and guitarist in numerous concerts. In 2024, he performed his own compositions as a guitarist, accompanied by Boris Tesic, a guitar instructor at the Kassel Academy of Music, in the "Culture Under the Chandelier" series at the ballroom of Wilhelmshöhe Palace in Kassel.
From 2020 to 2024, he worked as an educator at the Kassel Adult Education Center, where he taught the fundamentals of music and musical notation. Since 2024, he has taught guitar at the Harleshausen Music School. His compositional output includes songs, pieces for guitar, and works for various guitar ensembles. His pieces are inspired by diverse personal impressions and memories. Klaus Rothkegel's musical palette ranges from pieces that evoke the Renaissance, through Romanticism, to more modern styles such as blues, folk, and Latin.
